Bullying
It is a common thought that the best way to respond to bullying behaviors is to fight back and that the best way to learn how to fight back is through martial arts training. We consider this view short-sighted. Responding to violence with violence almost always leads to detrimental outcomes.
With that said, Aikido can help one face and respond to bullying behaviors in a positive way. First, the art teaches non-aggressive self-defense skills. More importantly, however, regular Aikido practice cultivates a robust sense of self-worth that derives from being more comfortable and capable with one's own body, from being open, calm and present within one's mind, and from being an integral part of a supportive and aspirational community. We believe a vital sense of self-worth expressed through a vibrant body and calm mind is the best foundation for any positive response to intimidating and aggressive behaviors.
